Siau Island Travel Guide For Sulawesi Indonesia

Siau Island is a remote island of an amazing nature in northeastern Indonesia, and it is very easy to visit from Manado, the capital of northern Sulawesi.

Pulau Siau may not be well known (at all), but it contains many things that make Indonesia great: scene, wildlife and volcanoes!

It is home to one of the most active volcanoes in the world (Mount Carangang) And it smokes constantly, and often spit rocks and volcanic lava.

The island is also home to unique species of Tarsier called Siau Island Tarsier, and you can see these small monkeys with small eyes in the wild.

This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!

Where is the island of Siao?

Siau (SIAU) is about 150 km (90 miles) northeast of Manado, in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia.

It is part of the Regency Citaru in the distant Citaru Islands, which includes the volcanic carrots in Siao, Sagolanda and Piaro.

How to get to the island of Siao

There are currently two ways to reach Siau Island.

The normal way is to take a quick phrase for 4 hours from Manado Port to Siao. The phrase is clean and safe and runs daily in every direction. It is like a fast speed boat with air conditioning and comfortable seats. The price is 220 km rupees.

The other way is to take a local trip to the new Naha airport (NAH). There are two weekly journeys with Manado Air (MDC) wings and it takes only about one hour.

If you go in the rainy season (from November to April), you may want to avoid the phrase because the waves on the open environment can be volatile and frightening. Otherwise, in the normal months, the phrase is great.

How do you wander

You can wrap around Siau by car, motorcycles or boat. It is not a small island enough to be able to walk.

The PickAAP was included and parking at the port at the hotel price, where we stayed (in the Kalea Beach resort), then we paid them for a few Karangetang.

You can expect to pay about 100,000 rupees to ride a motorcycle taxi from the southern part of the island to the north, or vice versa, because it takes about one hour to drive from the end of the island to another.

Motorcycle can be rented for about 50-100 thousand per day in ULU (the main city), and the roads are decent, but we did not feel that we are leading the self.

The island’s move to Maharau is 800,000 rupees for today (starting from Kalea), but you may be able to negotiate less because it is a small boat and the islands are very close to Pulau Siau.

The best things that can be seen and do on the island of Siao

• Mount Carangang

the Karangetang Volcano It is the amazing feature on Siau Island, and you cannot go anywhere on the island without seeing it.

It is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, and the highest has dual smoking pits. If you are lucky, you may be able to see her as she starts from molten lava and rock bombs at night, which is what you do so much.

You can go up to the top of Karangetang if you feel crazy, but to be safe, most people only walk on the mountain and meet in drilling smoking from a distance (and even this risky).

It goes without saying that walking for long distances this volcano is an amazing (but difficult) experience!

• Mahero Island

Mahoro is a small island east Siau that contains nice white sands and some of the most waters that we have seen in Indonesia, in addition to that you can see a smoking volcano in the distance!

It is easy to visit Mahoro in addition to the other nearby islands on a one -day trip from Siau where you can reach it in just 30 minutes by theft.

There is also a short path to the top of the island, but we have been overwhelmed since I was planning to raise the Gunung Karangetang the next morning.

Amazing beach

While we were in Mahero, a local couple who were standing on the island asked us to give 50 thousand rupees as “cleaning fees” after their friends had a big party there.

There is no objection to paying the price of garbage cleaning, but we have never seen them doing any cleaning throughout the day (just a nap), so we provided 20 thousand and explained the reason.

There was some garbage on the island, but not very bad. In general, it’s one of The most beautiful beaches we saw in Indonesia.

If you explore the back of the island with a boat, it even contains many caves (including caves that you can enter) and a rock arc on the sea.

• Masari Island

This is another small island near Mahero, with more of the same white sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

You can easily visit it with Mahoro, and I heard that diving is good in this one, but we didn’t try.

From Mahoro, you can reach this island in only 10 minutes or less.

The island is home to some rare Malu birds, which are endangered species of endemic (only in Sulawesi and Puton).

• The discovery of the island of Sia Terser

Siau is home to its unique types of Tarsier, which is called Siau Tarsier. These are a little eye sprays that hunt insects in the dark.

There is a lot of tarsiers in the southern part of the island, and you must definitely spend at least one evening in seeing it!

Our Kalea Hotel arranged 2-3 hours of Tarsier discovered 150,000 rupees, including transportation for both.

In fact we have better luck in finding Tarsiers here from Tangkoko Nature Reserve In northern Sulawesi. We have seen many, and we heard more cut at night.

Remember to keep your distance and do not use the camera flash (small lamps are fine). Siau Tarsier is threatened with extinction, so you don’t want to emphasize young men.

I used a stock lens for these pictures, but with the appropriate camera set up and long -term lens, I’m sure you can do better.

• Temboko Lehi Beach (Temboko Lehi Beach)

This is Spring’s hot beach on the northwestern side of Siao Island.

The source of the hot water is from the underground cracks at the foot of the Karangetang volcano, and the water is very hot in reality for swimming directly, although there is a safe swimming pool near it, the locals can show you.

Temboko Lehi is unique because it is the only hot beach in Indonesia! In fact, this is very rare anywhere on the face of the earth. I think there is only a handful around the world.

• McAkalia Island

Makalehi is a remote volcanic island near Siau that can be accessed by boat in about two hours. We decided not to try it because the waves were harsh when we were in Siau.

The center of the island has a large heart hole lake, and you can get great views of it by climbing the hills.

Where is the stay on the island of Siao?

• Calia Beach Resort

We stayed for a few nights in Calia Beach ResortIt is the main place to stay in Siau, located at the southern end of the island.

It was placed on a rock beach with views of the volcano in the distance, beautiful breeze, and the small explosive explosive cancer that walk on the sand. Until we heard tarsiers in the trees at night.

The rooms are very essential, with running toilets and manual shower. They do not have A/C, but the fan is enough to keep you calm at night.

Everything needs a little maintenance and the bed network will be nice, although we have seen very few mosquitoes. The hotel staff were nice and useful, and they were ready to negotiate the prices.

We paid 500,000 rupees per night during Covid, which included transportation to/from the port and 3 meals per day for both of us. All food was amazing.

You can contact them via WhatsApp on ☎ +62 821-8773-3163.

• Other accommodations

There are many basic rhythms that appeared in ULU, the main city on Siau island.

My supreme recommendation will be Small houseIt is located in the main city directly by the port, and it has its own small restaurant and minimum units nearly.

Note that it is a very essential house, but they have double bedrooms or family rooms available with A/C, hot shower, and TV. Prices range from 220 thousand to 550 thousand per night, depending on the size and type of room you choose.

Similarly, it is owned by the same people as the Kalea Beach resort, so the call number is the same (+62 821-8773-3163). The woman who runs the little home is very friendly and useful although she does not speak English much.

After Karangetang was zen, they allowed me to use the bathroom in Little House and we gave a free breakfast even though we did not stay there!

Other tips for Siao Island

  • ATMs: There are many ATMs operating in ULU. We used BNI and give RUPIAH notes the youngest 50 thousand.
  • Credit cards: No credit cards were accepted anywhere when we visited. You will have to pay everything according to cash or bank transfer.
  • electricity: The entire island has 24/7 electricity, although we passed a few 15 minutes in Kalea.
  • Cell Service: Telkomsel has a good 4G reception throughout the island. We used this for a hot point sometimes because we had no Fi Fi.
  • Wifi: No Wi -Fi is on Sayo Island, although I am sure that it will change soon. Calia told us that they were planning to add it soon.
  • religion: Like Manado, most people are Christians. There is one mosque in the city of Ulu, but we did not notice any noise in terms of we were staying in Kalea.

When to visit Pulau Siau

Siao has a tropical climate in the rain forests similar to Manadu and the rest of the northern Sulawesi. The most dry months from July to October.

The most moisture is November to March, so try to avoid it if you can. We went in June and the weather was good.

Happy trips!
